Agree on what the number means
Teams can use the same word for different measures. Define each business metric, its source, update frequency, owner, and permitted use. A dashboard becomes more useful when people know what they are comparing.
Build a traceable pipeline
Keep a clear path from source records through transformations to reported measures. Track missing records, duplicates, reconciliation failures, and refresh delays. Make issues visible before someone acts on a misleading report.
Separate forecasts from observations
Show observed values and modeled estimates distinctly. Document assumptions and evaluate forecasts against actual outcomes over time. The goal is better operational understanding, with human accountability for consequential financial decisions.
Start with one decision
Choose a decision your team makes regularly. Map the information required, the existing uncertainty, and how a better signal would change action. Build the smallest reliable data product that improves that decision.
