Find context that repeats
Imagine a service assistant that uses the same approved handling guide for many requests, alongside a different order record each time. Reprocessing the unchanged guide may be a useful optimization target. Our suggested starting point is a small inventory: which instructions repeat, who owns them, when they change and which facts must be retrieved for each request. Keep only context the task actually needs.
Design a stable beginning to the prompt
Anthropic documents prompt caching as reuse of matching prompt prefixes. Cache hits require identical content through the selected boundary. Its guidance places reusable instructions and reference material first, with changing request information later. Minimum lengths, cache lifetimes and configuration rules depend on the model and platform. Our proposed implementation keeps a versioned instruction template and checks actual cache usage instead of assuming repeated wording guarantees a hit. Anthropic: Prompt caching.
Keep changing business facts current
For the service example, our recommended request flow retrieves current order status and applies the user’s access permissions each time. Give reference documents an owner and revision identifier, and replace the supplied version when guidance changes. A successfully reused prefix only tells you that processing was reused. It does not establish that the business information supplied to the model is still valid or authorized for that user.
Measure the part of the workflow that improves
The vLLM documentation explains that automatic prefix caching reuses computation for a shared prompt beginning. It reduces input processing work, while generating new answer tokens still takes time. Our pilot compares cache-enabled and uncached runs of the same representative requests, including cold starts and changed documents. Measure time to the first response, total completion time, answer quality and the full operating cost. Include cache writes and misses in any hosted-service cost comparison. vLLM: Automatic Prefix Caching.
Make updates and boundaries reviewable
Before rollout, rehearse a guidance revision and confirm the next request uses the new version. Test how the application behaves when cached processing is unavailable. Check the selected service’s cache isolation and data handling against your requirements, and minimize sensitive information in diagnostic logs. Record the template version, measurement window and decision owner. Continue the optimization only when the observed benefit supports the business case.
